US has terminated health insurance exchange access for about 760,000 Obamacare enrollees due to widespread fraud allegations

In a major health insurance crackdown, the Trump administration has canceled the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace enrollments of roughly 760,000 individuals due to alleged widespread fraud. The multi-agency enforcement action was announced by Vice President JD Vance’s White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. Officials stated the purge targets unauthorized registrations, improper subsidies, and "phantom enrollees" who do not exist, a corrective measure projected to save taxpayers approximately $2.2 billion.

Officials singled out predatory insurance broker rings that allegedly generated tens of thousands of fake enrollments to harvest government commissions. In response, CMS issued a six-month moratorium on new agents and brokers registering consumers on the ACA exchanges.

Federal health officials focused on accounts that had never filed an insurance claim, had no records of contacting their insurer, and had premiums fully covered by government subsidies. The administration stated that many accounts lacked valid Social Security numbers or belonged to deceased individuals, legal non-residents, or those with employer-provided healthcare. Beyond the immediate cancellations, the administration is implementing advanced identity and income verification checks for an additional 419,000 enrollees. It is also utilizing AI analytics to shift from a legacy "pay and chase" approach to a preventative model.

About 315,000 plans covering roughly 760,000 people were terminated, with savings valued at approximately $2.2 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies. Accounts with no record of claims, no contact with insurers, or unverified documentation were targeted.

The enforcement action—led by Vice President JD Vance's White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud—was implemented because investigators discovered rampant cases of unauthorized enrollments, missing Social Security numbers, and unverified documentation. Democrats and policy analysts have criticized the move as an aggressive effort to roll back the ACA rather than a targeted anti-fraud fix, labeling it an unjustified "smokescreen" designed to undermine the ACA and dismantle public coverage. But conservative think tanks like the Paragon Health Institute have supported the move, pointing to structural vulnerabilities like automatic re-enrollments and lose verification standards that invite exploitation.
